This Week in Calvinism - December 4, 2009

  • John MacArthur concludes a five-part series entitled "The Spirit's True Work."

  • Time Challies wraps up his own five-part series, "Leadership in the Home."

  • James Anderson on Calvinism, assurance, and inerrancy.

  • David angrily spouts, "Calvinists would have you believe that God blinds men's eyes to the gospel until He is content to give some faith to believe and withholds that same faith from others whom He wishes to damn! That is not the God of the Bible!" So I guess that means Paul lied when he said faith is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8).

  • Seeking Disciple vs. J. I. Packer

  • The Contemporary Calvinist made it into Eric Carpenter's top ten. Thanks, Eric!

Today I read in chapter 24 of Randy Alcorn's new book, If God Is Good:
"If families and churches could never choose to turn against each other and break each other's hearts, would we have fallen to our knees to beg God's miracle of reconciliation? Would we as much appreciate in the coming ages the everlasting loyalty and oneness of God's family? Choice is a bittersweet gift, is it not? Yet all this talk of human free will must be balanced with the reminder of God's sovereignty. Paul anticipates our natural response to his argument for God's sovereignty and election: 'One of you will say to me: Then why does God still bame us? For who resists his will? But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, Why did you make me like this? Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?'(Romans 9:19-21)Scripture appeals here to God's free will, not man's, to Creator's rights, not creatures' rights. And lest we think that caliing himself the potter and us the clay is playing God, we should remember that God does not play God. He is God."
